Modern music is amateurish by comparison, because it is indeed written by part time artists. Brilliant hit songs get written when an artist works on music 40+ hours per week for years, not 40 hours per month between day jobs. The same reason you won't make it into major league baseball by playing 3rd base for your factory's weekend baseball team. The crippling loss of album sales means record labels cannot afford to support a musical artist full time. Downloading and streaming killed the professional song writer. Don't like today's music? Blame the (non) record buying public. It's sad but true.

@chelfyn I totally agree, but I can't really blame them. It's hard to take chances when there's barely enough money in the industry nowadays to support artists. They gotta stick with what works. Risks are just that - risky. Risks can only happen when people have a cushion to fail with. Otherwise, 'don't rock the boat' so they can try and pay those bills. It's lose/lose for everyone. :(

Hate on them all you want, but 'Heaven' by the 80's band Warrant has no less than 4 (four!) seamless key changes in that song. That is way harder to do than it seems.
