  2. actually, they did. In the 1940's LA had one of the best transit systems in the world. and there was plans for TWICE as many freeways mapped out. A shell corp owned by Firestone, GM, and Chevron purchased the Los Angeles Railway and within two years had virtually dismantled the entire network of public transit. Meanwhile, since there was relatively little traffic on the expansive freeway system at the time, short sighted Karens with a NIMBY mindset fought CalTrans for less freeways, and won. See the uncompleted 110, 710 and 90 freeways, and also the never constructed 64 Malibu freeway as just some examples. CalTrans land for these project have only recently been sold.
