Remember mobile phone contracts in the uk when the phone was free and you paid for the contract ........as for the tv its the fear of missing out for people, the USA owns a lot of our tv....says it all US tv is very poor..i never bothered as screen play, writing and acting is very poor and the same stories going around in circles...with more avenues for productions means the quality has gone through the floor.....also dont forget the PCP car brigade, have to have new, they pay more out of fear....try living and owning old cars, easy to fix and don't cost anywhere near your monthly....but then dont lool clean new and narracistic.
