The army employed many scouts from tribes who were enemies of the tribes the army was currently fighting. A tactic that worked well and the scouts were fools to go along with it, since they were just discarded and sent to reservations after their service. They lacked a sense of the bigger picture.

I've read that Custer had ambition to be president, and a great military victory over the hostiles would be very helpful to that goal. If true, a very sick self serving motive for his campaign. Would like to hear historian's opinions on this aspect.
