26:54. Probably a mercy for the Japanese that Warspite wasn't sent to the British Pacific Fleet. There would probably be nothing left of Japan if she and Enterprise were to join forces.
92
Fun fact, Bankstown Airport in Sydney was handed over temporarily to the British Pacific Fleet from the Royal Australian Air Force as an aircraft replenishment base.
91
Get ready to feel the Bearn
90
@Aelxi 1945. President Truman: USS Essex. The time has come. Execute Order 66. Essex: Yes Mr President.
88
IJN: interesting. USN: Are you taking notes again? IJN: No. USN (pulls out spray bottle): Get out of here. IJN: Hisss
86
6:08:33. Enterprise wasn’t trapped at Guadalcanal with the IJN. The IJN was trapped at Guadalcanal with Enterprise.
83
And on today's episode of Everybody loves Raymond.
81
@arionerron4273 *Angry King noises.
81
Speaking of which. I still find it funny that after Midway, the USAAF Bomber pilots got into a bar fight with the pilots from Enterprise and Hornet. The former claimed they sunk Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, and Soryu in the earshot of those who actually did it.
74
The Aleutian Campaign could've been a lot bigger as a couple of months later. The IJN almost sent the combined fleet north to deal with the liberation of Attu. Which would include not only Musashi, Kongo and Haruna. But also Shokaku, Zuikaku, Jun'yo, Hiyo and Zuiho. Had such a thing happened, Nimitz would've been forced to call back several heavy units from the South Pacific. Including Saratoga and "Robin", but also sending the battered Enterprise and the new and recently commissioned Essex
74
You can still burn the ashes
73
8:04. Probably a mercy for the Japanese. Considering the one thing more dangerous than the Atomic bombs was if Warspite and Enterprise were to join forces.
72
One more thing. I was digging through my Grandad's service records the other day and i found out that his service on HMAS Lismore (A Bathurst-Class Corvette) was when it was deployed to the BPF.
71
When the USN began spamming Monster reborn cards for their fleet.
66
Also I’m surprised Halsey didn’t give a new order stating that anyone commanding a ship with an SG radar. Is to disregard orders to hold fire if they had a confirmed target. Edit: Alternatively (assuming he could not force his commanders to use a ship with SG radar as their flagship) is for them to treat the contact is genuine.
65
Do you know what's a bigger flex? Photographing it with one of the carriers that won that Battle.
65
Pity the other carrier wasn't named USS Deadpool.
63
Arashi (or whatever destroyer that was chasing Nautilus at Midway) should’ve received the Presidential Unit Citation.
62
And why am I imagining Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean doing just that.
61
Oh unexpected Robot Chicken reference
61
Also, for anyone who wants to research Spruance further, Check out his Biography, "The Quiet Warrior." By Thomas B Buell.
60
So she, Enterprise, Saratoga and who else created the club of “They took our sisters. So we’ll take their Navy?”
60
The silver lining in the loss of Lexington. Was that the US Navy quickly developed procedures to reduce the risks of Avgas leaks and explosion. When a carrier is under attack.
59
Fast and Furious Pacific drift. Would be the best title for what that Helmsman was doing with Enterprise.
58
She and West Virginia were the only ships to be present at both Pearl Harbour and the surrender. Pity Enterprise wasn’t among the ships present. Or the one having the Japanese sign the surrender on her flight deck.
56
Vestal: ENTERPRISE NOO!! Enterprise: ENTERPRISE YES!!
54
@PierreManslapper Can't forget Dick Best.
54
I’ve ran into people who claim that Yorktown and Enterprise’s dive bomber squadrons should have had the hit credits removed due to them only causing the fires and damaging Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu to the point where they need to be scuttled. I don’t agree with them as you’re basically nitpicking at that point.
54
Enterprise is best girl.
53
I imagine many submarine COs had spent the period before, during and after the debriefing with smoke rising from their heads and turning various shades of red and purple.
51
All the Bofors and all the Oerlikons
49
Still of the opinion that Cape Engano was a missed opportunity by both the USN and IJN for Enterprise and Zuikaku to have a one on one carrier battle.
49
In the shakesperian style. Horsepower! Horsepower! My kingdom for some horsepower.
49
@claymontgomery4616 that and Enterprise surviving the damage it suffered during the war.
48
27:52 Albacore: Hi best buddy. Taiho: Ahhhhh!!!
47
@hirisk761 I still believe that Enterprise had been with Task Force 38 when the Japanese surrendered. She should have been the ship on which the signing had taken place (with Missouri as an escort). To add salt to that wound, the Enterprise vs Japan sign should have a caption "Enterprise-1 Japan-0."
47
13:57. Thus, begins one of the bloodiest and most convoluted interservice rivalries in modern history.
47
They were kinda the exceptions rather than the rule.
47
@sealpiercing8476 actually power was almost restored when the Kates from Zuikaku and Jun,yo showed up.
47
First, thanks for using my idea drach. Second of all. Enterprise: I don’t sleep and you won’t either.
46
Reading up on both her and Graf Zeppelin. I'm not entirely sure if the Royal Navy was relieved or disappointed that neither Germany nor Italy built, commissioned and deploy their own Carriers.
46
CreedOfHeresy I heard that in addition to lacking the facilities. A reason why none of the US fleet carriers were sent to Australia for repairs during World War 2. Because Nimitz was worried MacArthur would steal them for his own uses.
44
Not to mention that for the most part. The Essex-Class was “Yorktown on steroids.”
42
@danielford1380 the Internet is full of people who like to split hairs on everything. Heck going even further. I’ve had people claim that carriers don’t have a kill count as the planes did all the work. Forgetting that they have their own guns. As well as a carrier’s primary weapon is their aircraft
42
The argument between Browning and McCluskey was actually a bit bigger. As when he found out. He got VS-6 CO Earl Gallagher and Enterprise’s Captain George Murray. Also McCluskey was recovering after being shot in the shoulder and Gallagher had his back thrown out when diving on Hiryu.
41
I think you already know this one, Drach. But there's a photo of USS Midway at the New York Naval Day parade in 1945, where she's anchored behind Enterprise. Shows how much the US Navy advanced in carrier designed from a treaty-era (albeit heavily modified) unarmoured flight deck carrier. To the enormous armoured flight deck carrier.
40
One of the books I’ve been reading is Enterprise: America’s fighting ship and the Men who helped win World War 2 by Barrett Tillman. Can never learn enough about the Big E (note to self get Edward Stafford’s book on her). But it dives into the Enterprise’s service from the pre-war era all the way to decommissioning and scrapping. With all the highs, lows and shenanigans in between.
40
That's not ominous.
40
@Foxbat2929 oh god. There’s also a lot of people who ship (pun intended) Washington and Kirishima.
39
One thing you left out Drach was that Jun'yo was in the background during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. As her Zeroes first provided CAP for the damaged Hiei and the Convoy that steamed down the slot on 14 November. Of course that didn't work out when aircraft from Henderson Field and Enterprise showed up. Supposedly, one of Jun'yo's Kates had found Enterprise but by the time she launched a strike Enterprise moved on.
