  149. If CarDiv 5 is replaced with CarDiv 2 at Coral Sea. It might be a bloodier tactical victory for the IJN. If I recall Shattered Sword correctly, Soryu and Hiryu had highly trained and experienced pilots. But their main strength came from Dive Bombing. So highly likely that Lexington may take 3 Torpedoes and another 1 or 2 Bomb hits. Which may sink Lexington outright. Whereas Yorktown may avoid the Torpedoes, she may take similar damage to Enterprise at Eastern Solomons. So 3-4 550lb Bomb hits, which is survivable but would mean Yorktown would not entirely be ready for Midway. Unless the damage control crews and later the shipyard workers at Pearl Harbor are being Intravenously fed coffee. Soryu is smaller than Shokaku and arguably more maneuverable. The issue is that she is also more fragile regarding bomb hits. For the sake of argument, Soryu still takes 3 hits. The explosions could catch something flammable like her Avgas system, even without aircraft in the hangar. Also, if one of the hits lands next to her stack, like at Midway and penetrates the lower hangar. Then it could damage or destroy her boiler and engine rooms leaving her dead in the water. Fast forward to Midway, and Shokaku and Zuikaku, for the sake of argument, are loaded with the same numbers of Aircraft as at Coral Sea. That's 21 Zeroes for Shokaku and 25 Zeroes for Zuikaku. 20 Vals for Shokaku and 22 Vals for Zuikaku, and 19 and 20 Kates for Shokaku and Zuikaku, respectively. Also, there are deck plans of Shokaku and Zuikaku's hangar decks, complete with aircraft spots. Assuming that the events leading up to and during the "Dauntless Ex Machina" occur similarly. Shokaku may end up like Franklin in that it would be a long, bloody and fiery battle with a slight chance of survival. But without the redundancies in here, damage control systems and the open hangar to vent the explosions, fire and smoke. She may go the same way as Akagi and Kaga. Zuikaku if caught in the same circumstances as Hiyru (closed in on TF16 and TF17 and lost most of its air group). Then it could take the 4x 1000lb bomb hits. As Shokaku survived a similar number at Santa Cruz. Of course, if those aircraft are full and ready for another strike, it would cause a fuel-air explosion. Resulting in Zuikaku being sunk outright or being scuttled. Being close to Midway would mean that even if the damage control crews worked through the night to get the fires under control. She may be spotted and tracked by radar-equipped PBYs and be finished off by Enterprise and Hornet the following morning.

  401.  @drakron  As mentioned by his Drachness and mentioned in multiple sources from the period and afterwards. The US Military would rather leave the Aleutians alone and let the Japanese Garrison die of frostbite (or the White Walkers). However, due to it technically being a US Territory, that strategy didn't sit well with the civilian population or politicians. So Nimitz wouldn't send his first-rate fleet units north for that campaign alone. Now, if the IJN decided to sortie to Combined Fleet. Then, the argument is how quickly appropriate units can be assembled. Nimitz would see it as an opportunity to wipe out a good chunk of the IJN's battle line and carriers before the Central Pacific Drive later that year. The IJN, by 1943, were starting to see the Aleutians as a backwater front and were only holding on as a matter of pride. I think it's the unauthorized history of the Pacific War podcast episode on Attu or the Battle of the Komandorski Islands. Seth Peridan or Jon Parshall said that there was a fear within the IJN that there was a risk of this theatre turning into another Guadalcanal. A massive slugfest with lives lost and ships sunk with little to gain from. So, the attempted sortie by the Combined Fleet was more done out of a belated attempt to relieve the Garrison stationed there. But with the loss of Attu and no major US Ships or forces in that part of the world (not even the Grey Ghost). There was nothing to be gain outside of pride, spite or Nimitz does send something worth the time.

  578. Thanks for answering my question Drach. In addition to what you've mentioned, if Enterprise was converted into a museum ship. Other exhibits and/or artifacts include: An SBD set up on the spot where Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd Class Bruno Gaido shot down the Nell at the Marshall Islands. A series of exhibits on the Admirals that used her as flagship. Most notably, Halsey, Spruance, Kincaid, Sherman, Radford, Reeves, Davison, Gardner and Mitscher. For Mitscher in particular you can tie that into his service as Captain on Hornet (CV-8) and CO of Task Force 58. For Halsey, that may result in a fight with Battleship New Jersey for some exhibits. A number of the aircraft aboard are painted in the colours and designations of some of her most famous pilots, including a short biography on them, such as Dick Best, Eugen Lindsay, Wade McClusky, Earl Gallaher, Swede Vejtasa, William R "Killer" Kane, William I "Bill" Martin etc. In addition to any IJN carrier aircraft. Some ordinance (if found and disarmed) or replicas should also be shown. An exhibit of early night carrier ops. An exhibit of pre-war carrier development. 1 of her superfiring 40 mm tubs should have its quad Bofors removed and have a 1.1-inch gun placed in it, as a before and after her 1943 refit. As well as show the evolution of USN AA during the war. Thanks to @Bkjeon4302 for the idea. Her kill boards are prominently displayed on the Hangar deck with possible portrait of her fighting Shokaku and Zuikaku. Either in the Hangar Deck or the Flight Deck paint the "Enterprise VS Japan" sign.

  774. I have issues with the Imperial Japanese Navy winning (or at least damaging) Task Force 58 at the Philippine Sea. 1. By 1944, the US Destroyers were to attack radar contact without waiting for orders. Sure, the Type 93 "Long Lance" has more range, and it can become a problem at night. As the pure oxygen they run on produces little to no wake. But this is mitigated if US Destroyers can first achieve a firing solution for their guns and torpedoes. Lee can use the destroyers to help his Cruisers and Battleships. There are issues with the presence of Yamato and Musashi because those 18-inch Guns would increase the standoff distance between the two battle lines. However, the mitigating factor for the IJN was that on 2 June 1944 (according to the combined fleet website). Yamato and Musashi engaged in gunnery exercises off Tawi Tawi against a destroyer at 38,280 Yards (35,000 meters). Musashi's Gunnery Officer Yunoki Shigenori was chewed out for the large spread from Musashi's main guns alone. Of course, at roughly the same time, Lee had his own issues with the Fast Battleship's own gunnery with their own bombardment of Saipan. But would the US Navy's radar and fire control allow the guns to acquire targets sooner than the Japanese equipment? 2. It would be a Mexican standoff between the two carrier forces. But at the same time, Mitscher has the means to get a strike against the IJN battle line earlier in the form of Torpedo Squadron 10 on Enterprise. I still remember the risk you bought up in your "What if Admiral Lee sailed west" video of either side having a friendly fire. Either Lee's ships would fire on the Avengers or LTCDR William I Martin (CO of VT-10)'s Avengers accidentally attack Lee's battle line. However, if Edward Stafford's book on Enterprise is anything to go by. Mitscher was planning on VT-10 to engage in a night attack on the Japanese fleet on 20 June. Had Task Force 58 hadn't spent that night recovering their pilots from the afternoon strike. For this scenario, if Mitscher authorises a night Torpedo or glide bombing by VT-10, the best target would be the battleships, given their size. Yamato and Musashi would be the primary targets for the attack. These attacks may not stop the Japanese battle line entirely. But it would mess with them in focusing on more than one target vector. Plus, they cannot devote much to their dual-purpose guns. Plus, unlike the American Carriers, the Japanese ones did not carry night fighters. At the same time, Mitscher would have the other carriers begin preparing to unleash deck load strikes before dawn. Its debatable which one gets off the deck first. But Mitscher would've been watching the time to launch his strike as soon as possible. This could result in the American strike arriving before the Japanese one and finishing their battle line and protecting Lee's ships as they withdraw. 3. There are also Kamikazes. Say by the start of 1944, the Imperial Japanese Navy High Command accepted that their pilots are no longer capable of fighting their way through an American CAP or anti-aircraft defence the conventional way, as they did in 1942. Instead, it is proposed that the planes launch from the carriers and suicide into the US ships. With the escorting Zeroes deliberately causing midair collisions with the CAP, Judy's Jills and Vals Kates make Kamikaze runs on Task Force 58. Once they have been launched, Ozawa retains a few fighters for self-defence and withdraws to a safe distance. The CAP was distracted by suicidal aircraft despite the formidable AA defences. Not all the aircraft would be shot down and could crash into the fleet and light carriers.

1218.  @88porpoise  Did a double check and yeah she was laid down a week after the 2nd treaty was signed. On the flip side. There’s also every chance that Congress could withhold money from the navy until they agree to build Wasp to a full Yorktown. Remember it’s not unusual for ships to be cancelled either on the slip way or after they had been launched. Also Drach had stated in last week’s drydock regarding whether it was better for Essex to have been built as a Yorktown earlier rather than wait until 41. The US did have the industrial capacity and resources to build another Yorktown Even by 1938 if Wasp was constructed as a full Yorktown. It doesn’t change the diplomatic situation that much. Hitler is still running Germany, the Italians are in Africa and Japan is stuck in a war with China. Also, the IJN had got started on the treaty-breaking Shoukaku-Class Carriers. So there’s no fundamental change to why the Naval Expansion Act was passed. If anything it might encourage Congress (or at least FDR) to include an upgraded Wasp. Speaking of which her keel being laid down in 37 or 38 wouldn’t delay her commissioning that much. Say we use the timeline for Yorktown and Enterprise’s construction. That’s 2 years between Keel laying and launch plus another 15-18 months for fit out. Resulting in her being in commission later in 1940 or early 41. So by the time, Pearl Harbour happens. The US Navy could confront the Kido Butai with 6 effective carriers of their own. As opposed to 5, as Ranger doesn’t really work.

1417.  @einaol  1st. Saratoga showed up a couple of days after the battle with a relief air group for Enterprise and Hornet. Wasp and North Carolina showed up in San Diego on June 19. Along with additional cruisers and destroyers. 2nd. Reading through Shattered sword and it becomes clear that Yamamoto was quite insistent that Midway be the spot where the US Navy carriers were to be destroyed. Even if it was delayed that would not change. If anything, he may think that Nimitz would either keep Enterprise and Hornet in Pearl. Or send them into the South Pacific to continue the raids. A delayed Battle of Midway would benefit Yamamoto in that it gives him 6 fleet carriers. With refurbished air groups and time to absorb the lessons from the Battle of the Coral Sea. But it would benefit Nimitz more as it would give him more time to acquire more ships and aircraft. Have Spruance adjust to carrier operations. Yorktown is given more thorough repairs and minor refurbishment. Break in Hornet and its air group and possibly have all carriers exchange the TBD Devastator to TBF Avengers. Plus if the code-breaking is maintained at the same standards. It allows time for the battle plan to be adjusted. Also, the additional time may allow the Marine Dive Bomber pilots to further adjust to the SBD Dauntless and along with the USAAF. Come up with a combined strike doctrine. 3rd. Nimitz already had risked his entire carrier force. When he sent Yorktown, Enterprise and Hornet to Midway. They were the only carriers available at the time. With Lexington sunk at the Coral Sea, Saratoga stuck on the West Coast and Wasp transiting the Panama Canal. Those three were the only ones he had available. So he had no choice. Also if Saratoga and Wasp were present and ready. They would be deployed as well.
