Ā @visionist7Ā I know it seems shallow, but I totally agree. Any soldier would rather wear a cool looking helmet than a crap one that makes them feel stupid wearing it, even if it offered better protection. Thereās something inside us that wants to look cool with the helmet on. You notice all iconic helmets of ww1 and 2 are pretty cool looking, especially the German types. The US m1 is iconic too, and although similar to the Russian helmet and others, just looks better. And all modern helmets used today do actually look good, and are reminiscent of the German m35ās and m42ās etc.

Thatās a terrible looking helmet. It doesnāt deserve to be in this presentation. No wonder Hitler rejected it out of hand.

The flange became much shorter. There was also a model with sections cut out at the ear area. Those were ww1 helmets though. The m1935 helmet had a shorter peak and a shorter flange.

That helmet is likely what is called a ābanded m35ā they were used by police and civil use as they hadnāt the same ballistic protection of the very similar m35 combat helmet. But the difference in appearance was so small that you do see some soldiers in battle in ww2 genuine films who are actually wearing the banded m35 in combat. Itās likely that the soldier just needed s helmet and used a banded m35 not knowing it offered less protection. I guess a helmet was a helmet to them. Iāve seen them worn in battle a few times. Itās fun to watch the old genuine war footage and try and spot exactly which type of helmet they are wearing. When you get fairly good you can tell each one from another. And the number is the year the type came out- so in early war footage youāll only see m35ās being worn. Because the m1942 model hadnāt came out yet. Also in watching ww2 parades of the early ss you can see they are still wearing ww1 helmets, as the m1935 helmets were not widely used until ww2 broke out. Your banded m35 is still a nice looking ww2 German helmet, and just maybe was once used in combat. š

Yes. My dad was in ww2, and he did mention that to me, that the theory was to reach over from behind, grab the peak of the helmet, and haul backwards with all your might! But I have never heard of anyone actually doing that. It seems far fetched to me. And wouldnāt work very well if the German had his chinstrap over the peak šš

An m40 1942 helmet? It must be an m40 or an m42, it canāt be both!

It may have been a safer helmet but no soldier in his right mind would like wearing that crap looking thing.

Thereās nothing quite like the steel helmet to conjure up images and scenes of war in the mind of man. (Me, 28-9-21!)
