It seems to have always been the case that the poorer you are, the harder you have to physically work, for the lowest of low wages. Itâs still universal today.

I read it. Itâs an amazing book. The conditions were just unbelievable. People picking up old apple cores and sharing it between two of them. Starving. Nowhere to sleep. Awful.

Sadly, drinking has always been associated with the poor. The reason for this is the need for escape from oneâs own desperate situation for a short time. Itâs always been looked down upon of course- but you can scarcely blame people so poor for enjoying a drink when they have literally nothing left in their lives to look forward to than another hard days work the next morning and another pittance of pay with which you can barely survive. This is not a âlostâ situation of the past, but is still a reality for millions of people in first world countries alone. And the harder and more thankless the work, the less you get paid for doing it. Thatâs another thing that still stands true today. For only the desperate will do the worst work- and the desperate get paid the worst of all.

Iâve done some awful work in my time and always for low pay. I have always said, the worse the job is to do, the worse is the pay- as employers know only too well that only the desperate will do the work, and the desperate are not in any position to complain about the pay. Hence there are âlevelsâ of bad & dirty work according to the desperation level of the worker. If you are destitute you MUST do anything to simply eat. Bosses who know you are destitute will NOT pay you a decent rate of pay. They know you will do the work for a pittance, they know you have to. Hence the poorest people of any location will be found doing the worst work. Unfortunately, the poorer you get, the worse the work gets.
