More like Society: Work hard and be productive Hikikkomori: I give up Parents of Hikikkomori: I will keep supporting you and keep this quiet because this is shameful

@xenoblad Well try Communism then. It has plenty of room for losers and no room for winners

@Finn create your own business and work at a slower pace. these kids love computers so much they could learn to code and take on free lance projects (contract work has very flexible hours). Learn a language and do online translation work (again flexible hours). the issue is all in their negative attitude and their parents facilitating that attitude (not requiring them to pay their own way).

Anyone who thinks BBC isn't far out on the pro establishment left is drinking too much kool-aid

@Finn fact is these kids aren't even trying to be productive at all. zip zero nada. even a half effort would suffice to get them somewhere.

@Uriel238 Absolute rubish. From start to finish. Trying to blame gender "inequality" which have been world wide cultural phenomena (and found in all different species that have two sexes) on Judeo-Christian values is an absurdity. Not to mention everything else following that. Boys will dress Barbie? Hah, like hell they will. Boys couldn't give a damn about dressing up a grown woman in silly outfits. LOL. Just think about that for a minute. How boring and useless for a boy. Rubish, rubish, and more rubish

This virus mania is just getting more and more absurd. Swabbing bats and seeing how many virus particles we can find? Oh boy.

@theantiantichrist Fortunately there are more jobs to do online than simply code. Graphics, copy writing, video editor, musician, commentator, translator, digital assistant, the list goes on. We live in the here and now, not some AI dominated future, and right now there are plenty of jobs out there for them. The problem is rotten parents who created rotten kids. Said but true. Weak cowards who gave up on themselves and whose parents gave up on them.

Can't yet hold down a job... "I play videos games all night then sleep all day until the late afternoon". That could be a factor

One part to this equation is that the family continues to support them even when the young adults refuse to go look for work. Perhaps they are afraid of the shame of having a child potentially ending up on the streets?

Maybe his parents should have told him that 20 years ago

@bornestellar6334 "When is it cowardice and when is it making the logical choice of not playing an incredibly rigged game? Get over your ego." Yeah better to not work and be a parasite on your parents rather than trying to gain a skill. They'll be so much better off having not played the "rigged game" when their parents die and they resort to suicide. "It seems that in your eyes, you're not living life unless you're being 'productive'" Of course you are not, that is called being a parasite. You are living off the productivity of others and contributing nothing only taking. "So they'll be a software developer for a whole 10-15 years before being fucked out of a job, yet again. Great." Assuming that is even true, that means 10-15 years of good and increasing pay. How is that a negative? As I said, they can do it freelance online too, which is perfect for people like them. It is what I myself am doing, and I'd rather have that 10-15 years of pay totaling well over half a million possibly over a million dollars. I'm left with both money and skills at the end of that run. As for "learn to code", I think these guys mostly being computer game geeks they might lean towards code. But there are hundreds of different options and skillsets to perfect. SEO specialist. Facebook / Instagram marketing. Writing. Translating languages. Music production. Digital personal assistant. Graphic Design for Websites or T-shirts. Engineering Drafting work (pick a discipline). Data modeling. Tutoring. Data mining. Or just start opening up a book and learning a skill you think you could make money at as a contractor in real face to face life, I just listed jobs they could do remotely.

@bornestellar6334 "While those living off of family members should be encouraged to at least find a modicum of income to ease the burden off of their loved ones, one should also sympathize with those people and help them through their mental distress." So you don't disagree with my main point. It is up to them to at least be doing something, gaining some useful skill and contributing income. Yes writing a novel is productive, but it is more productive the more people it can reach and the more it improves the world. Our system naturally rewards those having the most impact (at least in a free market, but government skews favor to their buddies). And that incentive system makes us all wealthier. No getting on disability is not productive, but for some few it is a necessity. Making enough income to retire early means a life spent serving society (working) and doing so in a disciplined and responsible way. Thus rewarding good habits. And such type of people are not likely to waste the rest of their life; they've already got both motivation and discipline down so will be contributing to the general well being of their fellow man in one form or another. UBI appears appealing on the surface assuming the robot apocalypse is right around the corner which I don't think it is. I'd rather we let the economy adjust and people find new types of work

@bornestellar6334 Population increase in the Western world is I believe entirely due to immigration, which we can at least theoretically cut off at any time. Yes I don't know how fast AI will take over, I have no idea. Does anyone have a perfect crystal ball though? Economic trends are hard for anyone to perfectly predict, which is why no one is ever able to time markets when investing with any consistency (unless they are rigging the game). It is uncharted territory which is why it is so dangerous, but at the same time in part it is familiar territory in terms of government coming to the rescue and handing out cash. And that is what makes it feel so dangerous. I would be much more inclined to wait on this debate for those of the free market camp to come up with a free market non-government solution. Perhaps people being able to own shares in automation, being co-owners of machines and getting profits that way. But that too is a bit dangerous because no economy has ever been structured that way. Still I have more faith in anything free market than government run and centralized. This government is just too damned evil to be trusted with something so vital to life. Perhaps small local governments could do this; I'm wary of that power being centralized federally. If there is a way to do evil, government can and will, so better to have competition between different municipalities or if necessary states.

@bornestellar6334 I would also add on the subject of price inflation that is almost entirely a function of the federal government and federal reserve. Allen Greenspan deliberately inflated a housing bubble, and even mainstream Economists agree of the feds power in that bubble. Automation would actually have the opposite or a deflationary effect. So if we are worried about inflation the biggest culprit there is government and that is what we must restrain. Automation is actually working against that. Not to say it won't cause problems but just to clear up who is causing housing prices to rise too quickly for anyone bothering to read this thread. Yes I do think it would be a problem if we have machines and the common people don't own them. We should move towards an ownership society, but if there is a way to achieve that with less government supervision / controlling of the monetary spigot we could have some peace and avoid tyranny. But give this power to government (especially a large central authority) and how long is it until they start cutting certain people off ala China's social credit system.
