  1. I'm fine with people learning the hard way. Malinvestment like this happens in every bubble despite the SEC and all their regs. If the average person is financially illiterate there is no regulation that will prevent them from losing money doing stupid things.

  2. Creating a start up is another way of investing, but you're investing your time for several years. If you are successful, it can become passive when you're the owner and your CEO is making most of the big decision and (hopefully) doing it well. Or if you sell you could make a few million that lets you invest in stocks and make a living wage off dividends alone. So true it isn't purely passive to get there, but once you're there it pretty much is.
