Upwork has definitely gotten worse. I am top rated on there, and they used to send clients my way all the time. Now it is pay to play to advertise yourself instead of showing clients the best talent as a priority. When I don't pay they aren't sending me any clients now. Ridiculous.

For those worried about getting older, there is more to life than being able to bench press 300lbs and being able to jump high. You may even discover you are happier being 50 and financially stable than 20s and living paycheck to paycheck.

I have to strongly disagree with the "race to the bottom" theory. I thought the same thing back in 2015 and it discouraged me from freelancing. When I finally got over that in 2017/2018 I went out there, set my pay rate that I wanted and I got it. It's been like that ever since.

@danuve999 I offer full stack web development services. I mostly work with small sized companies or small dev shops with multiple clients. If I'm working with a dev shop I don't always know how big the client is, could be a medium sized company. I look for contract work on job boards, and also have good reputations built up on freelancing websites where I can find clients.

Good for you. Also don't believe what he says about freelancing sites as "a race to the bottom". I used to think so until I tried simply setting a higher rate, and now I am getting work at exactly the hourly rate I want. Turns out many people in USA want someone who they can communicate with better, even if it costs more.

You will definitely make it. Also don't listen to him about the "race to the bottom" in freelancing, I once fooled myself into thinking that and it discouraged me for years from freelancing. Took me over two years to change my attitude on it and when I did I simply set what rate (I started at $20/hr which was more than I was making at my job) and I found the freelance work I wanted.

@emmie_7 How can Upwork "ruin your life" if you are new? It's a place to start and work on real projects for money.

Try mixing some Potassium Iodine in water and drink it every day (10mg). Let me know if it helps. When I started doing that was when I finally had the motivation to learn to code again in a serious way. Was it coincidence? Maybe, but I don't think so.

You could freelance and travel. I did that in my early 30s. You may not make 250K + benefits, but you'll be making more than enough to travel and live well.

06/2017 is when it got good.

I actually wish I went this route. Instead I went to college for something completely different. Even though I've always been the type of person to self learn, I convinced myself college was necessary. So either way my career ended up being self taught and I didn't actually need college for it. But, live and learn.

@Kitiwake I guess it depends how well you save for retirement :)

Be careful not to over correct. People who grow up poor (I'll include myself in this) tend to think the answer is to leave their kids as much money as possible. I say leave your kids as much memories as possible, and make sure they have that drive that you have. But I think you are doing the right thing financially. You never know what tomorrow brings and it's wise to have money for a rainy day, just warning you that there are limits. Congrats on your success.

There is no escaping karma. Face what you were born to face in this life.

We have to ask ourselves what does weed or alcohol give us and how can we achieve that without using something harmful. Did God give us better alternatives that we aren't tapping into? I used to use as well, and I believe strongly in the power of prayer which has changed my habits from bad to much better now. "Ask and you shall receive". Some people believe we are simply asking our "super computer" brain, but I believe it is more than that. Either way, it yields results.

It is no where near what it used to be. It used to be if you were top rated they would send clients your way constantly. Now they charge you to make your profile more visible to clients, so you're getting outbid by someone paying more even if they don't have as good of a track record. I barely get clients reaching out now that they've made it that way.
