I think all American observers missed that. But his problem was with Putin who finally openly decided to side with incapable military rather than with the capable Prigizhin's band.

Not just that. Putin cut his source of cannon fodder. Prigozhin could not hire jailed criminals anymore. According to the new law they would go to Shoigu.

@jasonwright8546 Prigizhin never was in any chain of command. He always answered directly to Putin. This was the Putin's game to play Prigozhin against military and both against Kadyrov. The problem for Putin was that Prigozhin took too much power and popularity among his base of Russian "patriots". So Putin started cutting the support and supplies and refused to meet Prigozhin for several months.

@jasonwright8546 Putin used Prigozhin so long he was more useful than dangerous. Prigozhin's never was against Putin. As I said he was his creature, a counterweight to military bosses. Prigozhin absolutely relied on Putin, trusted an served him. You must understand how the Putin's rule works. He sets up different parties against each other's throats playing the highest arbiter between them. Military, the prosecution office, the secret policy, customs, the drug enforcement agency, all fight each other for influence and Putin's attention. Prigozhin was just one dog in the pack. This is also why when faced any real challenge, like the Ukraine War or getting rid of the oil-export economy, Putin fails miserably.

@edwardcullen1739 The Wagner Group retreated after taking Bakhmut. They were not active in Ukraine. As for the Russian side the chaos there is comparable only with the insides of Biden's head. They would notice nothing and they did not.

Sure, this is why Prigozhin took the headquarters of Russian south army and the major military airfield and the whole city of million people in just one hour. The strength of military forces and Putin's popularity played the key role, no doubt... 😂
