Not very enlightening, rather the opposite.
1. Ukrainian to Russian language is not like Spanish to French, it is like Scottish to English. Same words, heavily accented. Sometimes similar words have different meaning. And there is a whole spectrum of south Russian dialects in between. Basically a Russian speaker can understand Ukrainian and conversely. During imperial times Ukrainian was not considered a separate language its teaching was prohibited.
2. Modern Ukrainian statehood was not created by Germans, if Curtis meant the short rule of getman Skoropadsky. It was by Soviets, per Lenin's national policy.
3. What Curtis seem not know is that Russians had many different national states before and after Moscow dukedom, Novgorod, precursors of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth etc. Moscow is similar to Prussia in regard of claiming to be German Empire when Prussia was not even ethnically German. Ukraine can claim old Russian ancestry as much as Russia does, even more, straight from Kievan Rus.
4. Curtis can ask himself a very simple question. Why Germany and Austria, US and UK can coexist while Russia and Ukraine cannot?
