  1. If a person kills one person it will play on their mind even if buried and denied, as it's an unnatural act to kill another. So he is slipping with old age now, clearly he knows deep down that he is a major sinner and he must be terrified when thinking of his own death.

As to your question as to why people continue killing, I can't pretend to know that, but serial killers are not "normal" people psychologically. Why do so many soldiers experience PTSD when they get back from the battlefield? Because they may have killed another person and it goes against our basic human nature to do harm to another. The people that are violent come from homes where they were not nurtured or loved and in my opinion especially in the case of men. If you don't have a strong identity in your initial family unit you will seek it elsewhere which explains why so many hateful ideologies exist.
