Ships weren't the only things responsible for the slave trade. Individual people owned those ships, other individual banks and institutions financed them. Much of the public was outraged by this small group of capitalists who kept the whole thing going. There were capitalists who commissioned and ran ships that ran the slave trade. It's a very small, and unbelievably wealthy group of people and their descendants that ran the slave trade against the wishes of the common people.
