  9. I recall a few months ago Mayor said New Orleans did not have crime problem...what has changed? Seems to me that when the leadership of the city is in denial, then she is the problem. She is a wrecking ball, she wrecked the city's infrastructure by not having correct management over construction projects; she wrecked her reputation by standing with and supporting a convicted teenage carjacker, IN COURT, and ignored the victims; she wrecked a marriage by having an affair with her assigned NOPD security officer, in the city owned apartment in the French Quarter; she has wrecked the city's trust in her, as she is possibly facing a recall; and she continues to wreck the future if this city by ignoring the facts and avoiding the problems...instead she plans to coast the rest of her term, enjoying spending the city's money on luxury vacations and perks, while under the protection of her title as mayor, and surrounded by security...immune from the crime and violence that the rest of the citizens of the city face every day.

  29. It's pretty clear that NOPD has lost complete control of the city. Jefferson, St. Tammany, St. Bernard parishes do not tolerate this type of lawlessness. If someone jumped on a police cruiser in any other city, their butt would be in lockup facing numerous charges (creating a disturbance, destruction of property, battery on police officer...). In New Orleans, cops are afraid to arrest anyone, as they may have charges brought against them, possibly lose their jobs, or even worse...be shot at. It is time to bring in National Guard and have them take over law enforcement in NOLA.

Based on body camera video and store camera video, JP Officer's did an excellent job at trying to deescalate the situation, but suspect refused to comply and became aggressive, drew a weapon, and fired a round...recipe for disaster. Sorry for his family, but police officers have a right to go home to their loved ones also.

  46. If officer was "under attack" he should have responded by drawing his weapon and firing at the threat. The problem is in NOPD, that officers are either constrained by what actions they can take in a situation (Consent Decree), or they just don't care anymore because they feel defeated by the judicial system. When you see the revolving door of the criminal justice system putting recently arrested thugs back on the street within a few hours, it makes it less motivating for officers to want to arrest criminals...knowing that they will be right back on the street in a few hours, or days...why risk your life to only see it wasted.

First issue is that NOPD is severely understaffed...mostly due to 1) pay is below most other agencies for same work/risk, 2) police officers are overly scrutinized for their arrests, and 3) still trying to work around the consent decree. The other part of the problem is that Orleans now has a progressive DA who refuses to prosecute non-violent crimes. And even for violent crimes, allows the bonds to be set so low that the criminals are in and out of jail in 24-48 hours and then back on the street to continue their crime sprees. Criminals know that the odds are in their favor to either 1) avoid capture, or 2) if caught, be released almost immediately.

  71. The part of story that is missing is that suspect was fleeing the police and she rammed a JPSO vehicle... Officer had right to shoot as that is considered an attack on an officer. Additionally, she was drunk, and driving around with 4 kids in the car, why does news report report that part of story...she was endangering children while she went on a DUI rampage.

  90. The equipment is not the source of failure, SWBNO as a whole is the Failure. They cannot get a basic water bill correct, but oversee billions of $$$ of pumping and drainage equipment and systems within the city. The city is below sea level, so competence it critical when it comes to maintaining drainage, and they have proven time and again that the task is way beyond their reach...bring in some professionals not affiliated with government and maybe there will be progress and protection from flooding.

As they continue to investigate, there will surely be more solid evidence tying him to this crime. Also, it makes no difference to the families he impacted by his act as to whether or not he has mental health issues...they want closure, and we as a society want one less murderer consuming our oxygen and $$$.

Courts sometime administer justice, but there are times when citizens take the law into their own hands. Murder is a violation of the law, as determined by court and jury of peers. It is not murder if court sentenances someone to death. It is also not murder to defend yourself, and family, against someone trying to harm you or them…law allows people to do that. If that woman driver would have shot and killed that scumbag who stabbed her, she would not be charged and would not be murder. You, my friend, are the one who Is comprehension challenged.
