I'm Chinese American and went with my parents visiting their village. We were called "金 山 客", so we were expected to give everybody money. They invited us to several banquets, but we made excuses we had other plans. I made friends with the village cabbie and he quickly drove us away from the crazy mess. Villagers were yelling at us for losing face. We invited the cabbie to dinner at our hotel. He never had food like this before so we order extra food for him to take back to his family and gave him extra money for the cab ride. We were surprised he came back the next day offering to be our tour guide.

@penguinvic9892 On another trip to China, we hired a tour guide rather than go with the bus group tour. He knew the schedules so we would eat at restaurants not on the bus route, then go to visit the sites before the buses to avoid the crowds. We had him eat with us. On the last day at the airport, we tipped him 1000 yuan plus the loose change we had. He started crying - apparently he had never been treat like this before. We corresponded with him for a few years.

@ericastier1646 Visitors from America are considered "RICH" so are expected to give money (red envelopes) to the relatives and some villagers. Then of course attending banquets, red envelopes would have to be given out again!! My mother gave some money to a couple of aunties that helped her family when the Japanese invaded China in 1937. While my parents were with the relatives, i sneaked off met the cabbie and bought him coffee. Going back to the courtyard, there was screaming and yelling. The cabbie said: "Let's get out of here"!!

Ha, ha... I broke all the rules and they yelled "NO FACE"!! I looked in the mirror and my face is still here!! I gave no money and didn't attend any banquets either.

@samvox994 We never went back to the village, but traveled to other parts of China. We do have some videos and pictures.

@mainers9618 Better yet, visit the village as a nobody, being a tourist, to avoid the hassle!
