With Vietnam there's no longer North and South Vietnam, but that's the case with other places: North and South Korea, East/West Germany (back when that existed), Soviet Russia (as opposed to the modern Russian Federation). Even to distinguish between Imperial Germany (the Kaiser's Germany) and the WWII Germany (Nazi Germany). With Communist China sometimes called Red China (the People's Republic of China), there's also Taiwan (The Republic of China).
