I am a supporter of the free market and the general principles of comparative advantage (eg, not every country needs to build their own cars), so its interesting when the government of a country like Taiwan kickstarts a semiconductor industry (see Asianometry's video "How Taiwan Created TSMC") and ends up succeeding so much it doesn't just no longer require state subsidies but dominates the industry globally.

In the 1980s England was a innovator in the computer industry, teaching students with the indigenously developed BBC Micro computer, so it's funny (and perhaps expected) that Margaret Thatcher's controversial 1980s laissez-faire reforms of the United Kingdom's tightly-regulated post-World War 2 economy ended up mirroring the laissez-faire environment of Colonial Hong Kong and with both places undergoing brutal deindustrialization and eventually becoming overly reliant on the finance industry. Another parallel is that because of Brexit the finance industry is reportedly starting to leave London for Germany (and I'd expect, Switzerland). And thanks to Xi Jinping ending One Country Two Systems the finance industry is leaving Hong Kong for Singapore (for global companies), and Shanghai (for companies targeting the China market).

@ProfCantonius Under Xi Jinping's leadership, I think Hong Kong will become "just another city in China". Before Xi Jinping, I thought there was a high chance for an extension to the One Country Two Systems model because Hong Kong's common law system is very useful. These days I think China's top leadership mistakenly believes that China has nothing to learn from Hong Kong's model and at 3% of China's GDP it's not a place that even matters to China anymore. I think Hong Kong will still do OK: it will continue to be far richer than China and preserve a lot of its wealth. But it will definitely becoming less of a global city. This may change if Xi Jinping leaves office, but that's not going to happen in the short term. * (I'm not from the region, so my analysis is based on my reading about Hong Kong and the psychology/decisions that the leadership of China has made)

Premieres receive a bunch of comments and likes before the video goes online, and YouTube's clock only starts counting once the video is released. From what I've read, this makes premieres do better than non-premieres in the long-term, because the algorithm takes into account the number of comments and likes since the video became available. I agree it's annoying that you can't watch instantly as soon as it's scheduled. I have an idea on this which I have messaged Asianometry about.
