Speaking of Politburo Standing Committee members, I'd like to hear your analysis on the 2012 Wukan Democracy Experiment, which was of course later crushed by tanks. It was spearheaded by Wang Yang who later joined the 7-member Politburo Standing Committee -- a position he still holds. It seems that before Xi Jinping consolidated power, there was some acceptance that China could start using democratic processes to resolve disputes at least at the village-level. Maintaining such an experiment doesn't risk the CCP's grip on power, but would pacify other countries from launching Trump-style trade wars because China "is headed in the right direction". Such experiments would also help pacify Hong Kong independence movement ("Look at Wukan. Don't worry, by 2047 China will be a democracy too!!"), and help keep China's system close to Taiwan's for eventual unification.

@Asianometry Al Jazeera English made a great 6-part documentary on China's (once famous?) officially-sanctioned democracy experiment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mglQckQGwbg
