I know about the Breton-Welsh link having lived in Aberystwyth for a while as a student. My favourite nerdy fact about the smaller islands is that Hans and Thomas the Tank Engine come from the same place, sort of. Please correct me, but I think this was part of the history for a while. The Southern Isles (Sodor - except not a d but a th sound like in Icelandic Dadi Freyr's name) was once the Norwegian name for the Hebrides and Mann, and the state and church authorities here took over, the church diocese of Sodor and Mann just transliterated without the special character or that pronunciation. And that ended up inspiring Rev Awdry.
