It’s really nice to see houses built to acknowledge the cultural aspects of life to some degree. I’ve always wondered why government houses for Australian Aboriginals are built like European houses, when it makes more sense for their lifestyle to build linked houses/rooms built in a circle with covered verandahs that face inwards to an open meeting area with a firepit in the middle. Or whatever other design they would feel more comfortable with. Would save a lot of houses from getting ripped to pieces if they had a personal investment in them. And really... just giving them houses that don’t feel like theirs in any way, doesn’t give them that personal investment. Unfortunately, many of our Aboriginal communities are poor & full of problems like drugs, alcohol, suicide, domestic violence etc. What European settlers did to them in trying to obliterate them & their culture is so wrong. But what our government has been doing since, to try to compensate & help them rebuild communities & integrate better, isn’t working for many so the government needs new ideas & need to adapt. Just throwing money at a problem doesn’t actually help. We need indigenous Australians to understand that we now value their culture & we want them to be able to teach their children their own culture. And many of us really want to learn from them. And we want healing to happen so we can all move forward together.
