I had a classic example of how subjective pain is in a 15yrM patient who fractured his radius/ulna. He was literally screaming in pain. It was displaced, but still just a standard #radius/ulna, yet he required more analgesia & sedation to be able to move him off the football field & to hospital than any other patient I’ve treated, with far more severe injuries. When I asked his family if he’d ever previously had any significant injury, they indicated that the worst he’d suffered in his whole life was bruising, so for him, this was literally the worst pain he’d ever had & his brain interpreted it like he was being eviscerated or having his skin peeled off. It was really quite fascinating.
