Really makes you think how common it is for cartoonish foolishness to be so common among people of all walks, so much so that it starts to seem less cartoonish and more realistic when someone actually does such a foolish act in flippant disregard to existing consequential demonstrations.

@BaldBlokeOnABoat They knew because they had a calculated point at which human survivability from radiation poisoning was unlikely or impossible, they knew the risks and the numbers, and they ignored them anyway, killing and harming themselves.

@darrennew8211 The fact a failure didn't basically crash the system kinda pisses me off, I understand on the low level instigating that is hard and I wouldn't blame the hobbyist they yoinked and abandoned to consider that, but the fact a malfunction didn't crash is a scary thought for any developer, we may get mad when our programs crash, but its preferable to crash then let a failure run unimpeded, unfortunately web developers are making that exact mistake with JS, hopefully no one is relying upon javascript to not kill someone but I bet you someone is being that stupid right now. Its definitely resulting in back doors, exploits, and other sandbox breaks I know that for certain, but nobody seems to care that privacy and security is a worse flaw then outright killing singular people. (as it will result in more dead people in the long term)

@Justowner The FDA is not known for software QA (as any government agency isn't) and their hardware QA isn't exactly that robust.

@darrennew8211 Generally the reason you want a crash too is that crashing early also means complaints to the developer that can't be ignored and hopefully it'll be noticed earlier and thus fixed earlier, we of the software world love the concept of crash early because its more consistent at rooting out the problem.

From a technical standpoint, no sport should be called football, American "football" should be called American Rugby and "non-American" football should be called soccer.

@Senzeni No because according to the history of both sports (they all derive from the same point and were both originally called football in every country) soccer was designated to be the name of the groundball sport while rugby was designated to be the name of the handball sport, the leagues and nations named them individually soccer and rugby, (they were both called football, if you said lets play football to anyone about a century ago, they'd ask you which one) however when professional sports started to spread, for some reason the US started referring to American rugby as football while they started calling the other soccer, while the UK and its colonies forgot about the term soccer and started calling that football.

@darrennew8211 Eh, the problem is that you never know what is and is not a "harmless" crash, especially once you get to life threatening systems, there is no metric to knowing this, this is part of the reason you're violating the law when you try to use a Tesla to drive for you, even if Tesla now violates that crash early mentality for example, you are not supposed to trust anything implicitly and you should always operate as though something will fail. (and as in it will stop performing any task, you don't want a computer functioning as though its unaffiliated by a problem, that always hides the issue creating bigger problems that always grow to be life threatening if its ever gonna be) Software shouldn't be operated ever without consideration for hardware and if people forget then people will die, its only a matter of time. If people intentionally do that to themselves, they deserve what they get.

I don't get how someone even if they were outright writing assembly would ever conceive that software couldn't be bugged enough to fail in just a manner that it could kill, even if it were merely a fluke bit switch caused by subatomic particles on the machine, let alone a bug in the code itself, this is how you can tell the company responsible for the THERAC-25 didn't have a single damn developer in the company, when dealing with software, you should always have someone nearby who at least understands general software if you can't have the one who knows or built it themselves. This would've been so easy to fix if the company weren't made up of a bunch of fools, damn corporatists.

@Senzeni Technically they were both slang words until the original associations started using them, and then they stopped, however they were at one point canonized as official terms for the sports, least until the modern professional leagues were developed.
