France still has almost 90% Catholics, this translated to New France where Catholicism is still very strong. So yes, if you want to swear strongly, in French, you swear against something "Church related". There are equivalents for sh!t, and even fcuk; however, Chalice and Tabernac are very strong swears for a Frenchman
