so where the romans
2
" shivered in their boots" sure but they still managed to take paris a few times and gain normandy "price of visiting Scotland is death" certainly the romans and the anglos saxons would have agreed
2
"turned to" they where force to
2
im pretty sure the united states elite forces would have been better than the mongol empire
2
@Кристина_Шульц because they where decentralized
2
they gave up after christainty forced its greasy paws throughout norse society
2
raiding was less of an extra income, it was a necessity because of the trade bans charlemagne forced Christianity to place on pagans
2
except we dont have direct proof of that no matter how popular the theory is it should not be treated like its an in stone fact
1
so paris didnt happen?
1
at the edge of a sword so would any society
1
the danes started the viking age, but they where the first out as well
1
also raided paris a few times but watever, not like they keeled over and gave rollo normandy
1
becasue thats a hypothesis
1
so did most peoples even the christian anglo saxons would raid the celts in ireland for slaves who they would sell
1
@spacefertilizer "peacefully" flashback to crusades, genocides, destruction of holy sites, burning temples, christians selling pagan slaves from ireland, charlemagnes wars, pagan prosecution in conquered lands
1
well not full equals, inheritance right where in favor of males for example but yes, women had quite a lot of rights in norse society, even being favored when it came to handling family finances
1
yikes
1
couldnt since germany didnt exist
1
yet you turks didnt have mongols in the elite guard for some reason
1
eh christians did worse
1
@cheschafer3494 if a bunch of stonemasons move out of a country that does not explain why it topped being a thing, more would have popped up what is important is why there werent any new vikings popping up
1
@johannesklohse8115 not in a spiritual sense, in a quite literal cultural genocide way (with some regular genocide in the mix)
1
you mean like in vietnam? oh wait, americans still lost it
1
if the US army going to the middle east to steal their oil as retaliation for 911 is terrorism, then yeah
1
whats RC?
1
well, assuming that the mitochondrial dna on the shawl really is from jack the ripper, you would be able to narrow it down pretty far, it would have to be someone alive at the time, and in or around london that might narrow it down a lot or not at all, depends on how many in london at the time shared the same mitochondrial dna, it might have been rare, maybe not
1
no
1
in training yes, but easily corruptible and their tactics where basically none existent, they would use the same formation each time and use the same tactics
1
@emo81309 no the english word vikings does not mean raiding the old norse word viking does mean raiding the english word viking is the translation of the old norse word vikingr
1
technically knights had been a thing since the third century with the " Ordo Equestris" in ancient rome but knight comes from the germanic word "knegt" since the first orders of knighthood were created in 1019 in northern germany
1
@squakrock raids did not stop in the 800s even in 1066, harald hadrada raided england (although unsuccessful this is commonly considered the last raid) but i will list more raids that were after 800 886 - Alfred divides England with the Danes under the Danelaw pact. 900 - The Vikings raid along the Mediterranean coast. 911 - The Viking chief Rollo is granted land by the Franks and founds Normandy in France. 941 - Rus Vikings attack Constantinople (Istanbul). 991 – Æthelred II pays the first Danegeld ransom to stop Danish attacks on England. after this there is a series of england going between danish and angle rule until 1066 whern normans take over finally
1
i know, its nice
1
im pretty sure they didnt have bullet proof vests dude
1
maybe because byzantine emplyed the vikings and owned greece
1
caugh*normandy,danelaw,varenguanguard,kievanrus*caugh
1
that and concentration camps ps. rice farmers
1
danelaw, normandy, kievan rus that and they held back christian genocide long enough for their home to convert semi peacefully
1
we have archaeology of blacksmithies from the time, not only that but actual artifacts that show the present craftmanship
1
when and where?
1
except not exactly since theres no direct proof
1
caugh paris caught heathen army caught
1
no, nothing to do with the handles, the handles werent bone or maybe they where, we dont know because the handles are all gone but they actually but the bones into the iron itself, likely smashed into bits and powder or burnt so it would crumble apart but either way it ended up in the iron where it made it into steel
1
where? who are they raiding?
1
christians where the same
1
he was never called a "berserker"
1
@Princeofmellon the battlefield here is actually pretty even spartan bronze armor was strong and their spear wall was something many armies couldnt face, yes, but the vikings had steel and tactics when it comes to tactics the vikings culture had been one that had developed centuries of tactics against spear walls sparta only had one tactic because they could use the spear wall so well and no one could do that much about it
1
nah thats not them, they where replaced under christian law, so not its the christains facing modern issues not vikings
1
*Christians
1
vikings werent a race
1
they where a product of christian hostility they ended because of the change brought by implementing christian law they had a hyper masculine culture, as opposed to spartan hyper militant culture which is a war culture, its like the difference of "im strong" and "we are strong" they had less of the "we are strong" aspect they where diplomacy first and men of action second, so when christianity banned trade with pagans...
