I guess he's pretty old now and injury prone too and since you bought Pope he's pretty much a backup anyway, and you already have Darlow who is also a respectable backup, so I can see why it makes sense from a dressing room dynamics point of view, since you have 3 goalkeepers who are good enough to be in the squad and it'd be doing any of them hard to make them 3rd choice.

I mean tbh I wouldn't have been surprised to see him as the number one had he been a bit more patient, ten Hag isn't afraid to drop Maguire and Ronaldo it seems, so I think he wouldn't be afraid to drop de Gea either. But I guess the world cup means Henderson wants guaranteed game time, so it changes things for this year.

  3. Henderson isn't there this season though, refused to stay because of fearing he'd be benched even before ten Hag considered him at all. I can see why they want cover, Heaton is injury prone (i mean tbh so is Dubravka at this point) but they need an established goalkeeper, at least one, to push de Gea, all while signing someone who will be happy to sit on the bench but is at the same time good enough for the club
