  13. well their range used to be much greater previous to the last ice age they were all over North America and europe but since europe had very tiny refugia areas like only spain then you hit the Mediterranean they went extinct as the ice advanced, and North America had better refugia areas for plants and animals to retreat to during the glacial maximum
