I also was under the impression that it initially was meant to replace the Harrier directly and the other versions being the "hey, they could use that thing also, but without the VSTOL thing" feature. Well, do the Marines need that thing? I don't know. Don't know for other operators either. I mean, we don't have that Fulda Gap scenario just around the corner anymore with the main AFBs wrecked on the second day... nevertheless, just in case, that is a feature that would make the thing stay operational if the operator would lose their conventional base. Definately not complete nonesense to develop something like this IMHO.
