  99. If you really want to get a stealthy and worthy replacement for the A-10, you need the same playtime and the same CAS capabilities at least while increasing the standoff capability without sacrificing firepower. It could possibly be done with an YF-23 airframe that's made as robust as the A-10's (titanium bathtub and general resistance, just in case), get that gun into the weapons bays as well as an integrated TGP and use APKWS II with some improvements that make them useful at longer ranges since its current max range is limited by battery power and because it's de-spinning itself right after coming out of the tube. Why not lauch them ballistically with CCIP/CCRP solutions from much farther away and only let them stabilize and guide onto a laser spot in its terminal phase that even could begin like 5nm before impact. The gun would then only be used if there's little risk left. The guided rockets would become the main weapon. Why the YF-23 airframe? Well, it could defend itself better, just in case and it could get in and out of the danger zone much quicker. Also since it's almost a complete lifting body already, there'd be plenty of possibilities to use it as a fundament to house enough fuel for playtime as well as weaponry, maybe it needs to be made thicker, but the general shape wouldn't be too bad. Also, much less RCS and IR signature would help for those gun runs in case they'd become applicable. Of course, anything could throw some guided APKWS-like sticks from far away, including the F-35 which would be stealthy in case they'd manage to hide the pods inside somehow. And that brings me to the most imporant point that came to my mind when I saw the concept art: You can't have stealth with all that stuff hanging off of the pylons. Everything needs to be inside with some sort of doors that just open when needed. Anyway, even a stealthy aircraft lobbing sticks from like 20 or even 30nm away would be an advantage over one that is not, simply to prevent interceptors from being scrambled against it. That, and the "getting there and back home" thing. Anyway, after all it comes down to being a cost thing and with that I'd say the A-10 is good the way it is, but eventually it might not get replaced, but complemented by something that can do the same task with stealth in case it's needed while the A-10 keeps doing it where it's irrelevant. And that very well could be a specialized F-35 variant instead of something completely new. To be fair, I just want to see the YF-23 airframe to live in some sort, at some point :)
