  1. They didn't have 20mm, just .50 cal. But anyway, you'd always have 4-6 guns pointed at you from a single B-17 when attacking from behind and that especially adds up within a full box formation (that's 12 bombers in 4 sections of 3 each). Keep the time frame exposed to that firepower as short as possible while trying to bring as much 20 and 30mm in as possible.
