  7.  @thepilotman5378  That's what I was saying with the acceleration thing. Takes ages to get there and turning in a fight will shed that energy, so you'd really have to be a very patient and well-aiming BnZ style pilot knowing how to use energy advantage without burning it off by turning too far into the evading opponent. The P-51 can get dangerous quicker than most would imagine. Especially with the sheer mass of .50 cal it can hose down range. A lucky hit can be enough to take out either of the engines which were rather exposed and very vulnerable.

The 262 was faster than the P-51, but suffered from an atrociously bad acceleration (like the Meteor) which often made it possible for P-51s to catch up on them if they dared to drop their energy. They were especially vulnerable during takeoffs and landings as well as in the pattern. But your overall point is spot on. It takes time to mature and eventually, (almost) everyone will have it...
