The problem though is that with those sanctions they try to mobilize the people to stand up to their govt, but in the end it just results in the conflict being played on the people's backs by the govt anyway. Negative side effect of that is it can generate hate against the ones who impose those sanctions instead of directing that anger towards the root cause.

Hardliners tried to uprise against him and then Yeltsin took over and first tried to keep the ship on course, but seemingly failed and fell into the drinking hole, only to then finally put Vladimir Vladimirovich into power, hoping that he's be good for the country. To be fair, I don't know a lot about the Yeltsin era, I'd so much love to have some decent documentaries about it, but those don't seem to exist (yet) - it's a very important timeframe for understanding how Russia got to where it is now. The bad 90s are a product of Soviet politics in the 80s and probably even back in the 70s. Politics is like flying a helicopter, you have to anticipate what could happen before it actually gets to happen. And things do happen in a noticable delay. I see this in Germany a lot where people blame the current governing coalition for things that literally the previous 6 ones are responsible for (the gas dependency was founded by Schröder and 4 legislative periods of Merkel didn't change anything about that) while the current one now has to somehow get the derailed trainwreck back on track. Of course, they're the "bad bois and grills" ;) 5:50 Well, kinda... that was Putin's Rochade to make it look like him being democratic and make room for someone else only to come back 4 years later while having have pulled the strings during that time.

Splitting it up to both Poland and Lithuania (there was a time where both were one united country BTW, and it was quite large, also including parts of today's Ukraine) would make more sense than trying to make it German again. BTW speaking of ethnics, More than 60% of the "Russians" populating the Kuril Islands are ethnic Ukrainians... how about giving that to Ukraine instead? XD Most interestingly though, Sakhalin has a period in history beginning in 1855 where it belonged to both Russia and Japan at the same time - without a clearly defined border separating it. The shared sovereignty lasted until 1875. Every region discussed is vital to Russia's geopolitical and geostrategic plans BTW. Crimea because of the Black Sea Fleet, full control of the Black Sea because that means control over the "New Silk Road" and therefor the massive trade between the EU and China, Karelia because of the strategic forces (nuclear stuff, long range bombers etc) being based on and around the Kola peninsula, Sakhalin and the Kurils because of having unrestricted access to the Pacific (as a counterweight to the US Island Chain strategy; the same reason why China wants to have Taiwan back) and Kaliningrad being a massive military base essentially for deterrence (they could nuke Berlin, Paris and London without requiring ICBMs from there), but also being able to have a ton of troops "behind enemy lines" already in case a hot war would kick off. You see, it's always complicated. Which is why I typically love to drop memes like "TeH zUcK, Ambassador of the Ancestral Reptiloids, heir to the Dinosaurs, wants his planet back" into such discussions :)

  38. The lack of education is just baffling. Not wondering anymore why those people happily will join the war and will do the most brutal things. If their govt tells them through state TV that their beloved country is endangered, they don't even know how far away that theatre of war is and the fact that they're totally unaffected by it anyway. Which means, they might probably think they had to defend their home village, not even knowing for real "where" their "enemy" is. People having such a limited picture of the world is probably one of the most dangerous things out there because anyone in power could do anything with those, they'll just blindly follow wherever you'd lead them because everything you could throw at them for reward is better than what they've ever had in their whole lives. Calling them Orcz is kinda based...

  40.  @AceRamone  Fair point... I lost 97% of my vision 8 years ago, ended up being alone and never managed to get a job because of that. And my biggest fears are being alone, unemployed and therefor socially unaccepted in general, so basically I fear not getting out of that shithole. So far, I didn't make it... the hard fears are the ones you have because of experiences, not those you have because of expectations, unpreparedness or just lack of knowledge.
