@christopherellis2663 They are dialects (slangs) of the Italian language, but they are so different from each other - and sometimes radically different from the Italian language itself - that they are like 'another language altogether' - the only thing is that these are all basically oral languages. There is no formal written form. People have written in dialect but it is not an officially recognized written form - people write as they hear it and think it should be written. To give you an example - in my dialect (a small town in Apulia) "the door" in Italian is "la porta", in my dialect it becomes "la prrt" - similar, but, for example, "the young boy", in Italian is "il ragazzo," while in my dialect it becomes "oo wha-nyown.'" My parents were born and raised in Italy and they had a tough time understanding the dialect of a town 12 miles away from where they lived. Crazy!

in Italy whenever my grandmother had leftover spaghetti - any kind of spaghetti dish - she would add an egg, mix it in and pan fry it to make a spaghetti fritter. You cut wedges and eat. Delicious! I once had leftover spaghetti and broccoli rabe and did the same thing.

I think he lives in England

Fortunately there is no rule even in US and Canada. I am a historian of ancient history and have published essays and books. I don't use BCE or CE and publishers never said anything because they know they can't.

he's a scholar

I lived in Italy for 12 years - without subtitles for most of these dialects, I could NEVER understand what he is saying. I am from Puglia and there are even dialects from the surrounding towns of where I am from that I have a tough time understanding - even my parents who were born and raised in Italy!

I am so sorry that such a knowledgeable person as yourself has to be dragged into this mess. I'm a historian (of ancient and medieval history) and believe me - what the progressive left is doing to history is criminal!

Bravoooo!!! I lived in Italy for many years (the province of Bari in Puglia) and let me tell you it was impossible for me to understand a word from the first and last dialects you spoke! Wow! Like being in a different country! I could pretty much understand the rest. My niece lives in Florence and she is starting to pick up the Florentine accent as you spoke it!. She hasn't started saying hoha hola (coca cola) yet though!

You have a PhD in linguistics and have taught at university. I have a masters in ancient and medieval history and have written and published many historical journal articles. I thought that made us academics - each in our own field. Aren't we? Maybe we're scholars? Whatever the case, that person was treating you like an uneducated buff and that's not the case at all.

@prototropo I actually know, as a historian, that languages evolve explicitly 'because' of externalities. Your whole message, which was beautifully written, describes that perfectly.

Auguri per un buon Natale e un felice anno nuovo!

She was Greek-Macedonian, but I watched a video where this woman did extensive research on her geneology. Cleopatra's family tree includes Syrian and Persian ancestry. To be fair, casting Liz Taylor as Cleopatra was far from accurate, but back then Hollywood wasn't concerned about these things. They just got a beautiful actress to play the part - even though there is period evidence (sculptural as well as written) to suggest that she really wasn't beautiful at all. She just had an amazing personality.

OMG he is so right! I live in the US and my sisters and mother live in Italy. I told them I tried to strictly limit my carb intake for dietary purposes and my sister told me "but you do have pasta everyday, don't you?" When I told her no she said "How can you not???"

I wouldn't worry too much about the channel Kuelimika, which has less than 20K subscribers. Is he even a scholar? Anyway afrocentrism is an underdog theory even among black people.

I'm jealous. I'm a historian of ancient and medieval history. I can make out of lot of words and meanings in Latin when I'm doing research, but I never formally studied Latin. I am fluent in Italian though, since I lived there for many years. That's what makes it a little bit easier to understand or recognize some Latin words.

Wow, I'm American so American English is my primary language, but I am Italian descent and lived in Italy for many years and yet I understood absolutely everything you said when you spoke Spanish.

These progressive, social justice warriors make so much noise that they actually give the impression that their pseudo-scientific views represent the majority, but the reality is quite the opposite. They are a very small minority, so feel free to continue entertaining us with your very well researched videos. Sooner or later these progressives will become as pathetically insignificant as gnats. Their little wave will crash...

I have a question. As a historian of ancient and medieval history I can pretty much understand how Latin went from Prisca to Classical (I may be wrong so correct me!) - it seems to be a consequence of the Punic Wars, which introduced foreign language and customs into the Roman world. I can also understand how Classical Latin became Medieval Latin, which seems to be a consequence of the Fall of the Roman Empire - no central Roman governing power - foreign invasions of non-Roman groups from the north and other areas. I know that the Eastern Empire went Greek, but my academic insight (however complete or limited it may be) ends there. Can you explain what caused the change from Medieval Latin to Renaissance Latin, Early Modern Latin, neo Latin and Ecclesiastical Latin? Love, love, love your videos!!!

The progressive cancel culture is dying - it may not be dying fast enough, but it is definitely dying.

@Qmyoo But it will eventually come to a crashing end.

Salve Metratron! Spero che ti stai sentendo meglio! My question: What about in the wintertime? Did Roman soldiers wear socks? Or did the military fight mainly after the spring harvests? I'm an ancient/medieval historian and I do remember hearing this once, but I am interested in knowing if the soldiers wore socks in the winter.
