  1. Terrible, but it was a common attitude going back to the ancient world. In ancient Rome it was inappropriate, especially for upper class families, to cry at a baby's funeral. Little children couldn't contribute to the family name. It was only when children came of age and could marry into wealthy families or could attain high positions in the military or in government and could carry or uplift the family name and honor, that children had value.
