  2.  @russell4824  America is not a democracy - never, ever has been. While we have democratic principles, we are ruled by a representative republic. That means that we the people vote for people to represent us. We don't represent ourselves - as a straightforward democracy would do (as a matter of fact, there is not ONE country in the world today that is ruled by a straightforward democracy). When we vote in a presidential election we are "indirectly" voting for the president - we are "directly" voting for the democrat or republican electors who together represent the population of that particular state - the amount of electors is based on the amount of people living in that state. The more sparse the population the less the electors. If more people vote democrat in each state, then the democrat candidate wins ALL the electors of that state - both the democrat and republican ones. If the electoral college did not exist then the presidential candidates would concentrate all their campaign efforts on states with the highest population and screw the ones with the lowest population - our founding fathers recognized this potential problem and solved it by creating the electoral college. They knew that without it, the states with the lowest populations would remain unrepresented. The candidate would think "who gives a $hlt about them." If we rely on the popular vote, the states with the highest populations would be the only ones speaking for the rest of America - they would be the only ones voting for the president. The electoral college exists so that EVERYONE in the U.S. is fairly represented.
