  16.  @Newton14alan  10% of the U.S. population is poor - as opposed to 1% super rich, 6% rich, and 83% middle class. (and before you say anything - don't be lazy, do your own research). How do we get rid of poverty? 1. There is nothing in OUR capitalist society that stops any poor person from lifting themselves out of poverty. I know (and have worked for) many who have. Our economy by any standard anywhere in the world is very good even now as we stand on the precipice of a possible recession - it's why people continue to pour in from all over the world to live. 2. Stop the abuse of the super extended welfare programs which exploit people by creating a crutch long after they need it - and the only reason why I say this is because I know many - one of them, a family member - who are living like this and it is beyond disgusting. 3. Not living above ones means also helps. Unfortunately America has a very bad habit living off credit cards and getting themselves into trouble that they find hard to get out of. I have been in that hole - ended up living with roaches, eating bagels for breakfast lunch and dinner that I bought with nickels and dimes that I scouted for in every nook and cranny of my apartment. I've even had to borrow money for rent. The one person who helped me doesn't even know she helped me because she helped me by seeing her as an example. She was an attorney (same age as me) that I worked for who was making about $800,000 a year (twenty years ago). I realized that the only difference between me and her was that she worked HARD TO GET WHERE SHE WAS and I did not - I made stupid decisions - thank God I did not have a child out of wedlock (the greatest epidemic in America is the single parent family). By that time I realized where I went wrong, I was already in my mid 40s. I felt it was too late to change the trajectory of my life, but I did the best I could. The rest is too long to write, but I'm in a better place now because I tightened my belt and started to make better decisions. Nowhere near where that attorney is, but I do admire her.

  32.  @Newton14alan  no, 90% of the problem could have been avoided if the government used the welfare system for people, like you, who actually need it. I have a sister who has been living on welfare since 2009 because she lost her husband back in 2009. She has been getting nearly $3000 a month since then! How does that make you feel? A portion of it goes to each of her two children until they turn 18. The rest goes to her but only until she found suitable employment. She has been going out of her way since then NOT to find that suitable employment. For the first 7 years, actually, she never worked. Then she found a part time job in retail and turned down offers to become supervisor because it would have taken her over the threshold. And the government has done NOTHING to stop this - she's ABLE BODIED - HAS NO MENTAL HANDICAP! A woman I know on welfare - not working for about 15 years because of back pain and in those 15 years she had 4 children and goes out at night in high heels. Another woman on welfare, not working because of migraines. (I used to run to the bathroom at work to throw up from migraines, but I dealt with it). Young KIDS popping out one baby after another - on welfare - crying poverty. I once heard the story of a woman on welfare for years because of the trauma of having lost her son. My dad watched the head of his 4 year old son get crushed under the wheel of a truck - NEVER ONCE DID HE CONSIDER NOT WORKING! He had a family to raise - other kids to feed. He dealt with it!! You think the ones I mentioned are the only cases? It's become a pathological problem in the US and all because of YOUR left wing politicians. You need to tell them that they will have to explain it to God (one day) why YOUR difficulties are not THEIR problem. THEY are the ones who created this mess NOT the damn billionaires!! Now they need the billionaires' money to bail them out of the mess that THEY created!!! And they want to create more???? THEIR GREED AND SELFISHNESS AND LUST FOR POWER is keeping millions of people who DON"T ACTUALLY NEED welfare dependent on them . . . all for their votes - AT YOUR EXPENSE!!! I feel sorry for your situation but you are part of the problem by thinking the way you do.

  33.  @Newton14alan  my brother in law worked off the books as a mechanic his entire life making next to nothing. He didn't have the mental drive to work hard - couldn't tell if he was just plain lazy or if it was major depression. That's what I can't understand. He and my sister were literally living hand to mouth for their whole marriage and when he passed away she had absolutely nothing. But their situation was ALL their doing. My sister didn't want to work. She only started working years after he died because she got bored. I tried in vain to knock some sense into them. Anyway, he's gone, so I pray he is resting in peace. I used to work starvation wages too, but I kept doing everything I could to get out of that situation. I even taught myself some computer programs to make myself more marketable. When I made it the next step up, I did everything I could to teach myself new skills to make it the next step up from there and so on and so forth. I went at it with a vengeance. I've been through the darkest moments - mostly in the 90s at the height of the recession. Not sure if it was your disability that prevented you from making more than starvation wages, so I'm not comparing my situation to yours and I'm not mocking. I am not disabled, but my whole argument above was favoring the disabled over those other welfare recipients who are depleting government funds out of sheer laziness and stupid decisions. This subject caught me at a very bad moment in my life because it was just the other day that I argued with another sister of mine about our sister on welfare - that we need to shake her into action. One of her kids is now 17. In one year, she will lose a portion of the benefits because he will be 18. She lived for about 6 years with a friend FOR FREE!!! You would think she would have saved some money - nothing. It's maddening. My sister is going to be 57 so it's not like she's young and naive.
