@Newton14alan 10% of the U.S. population is poor - as opposed to 1% super rich, 6% rich, and 83% middle class. (and before you say anything - don't be lazy, do your own research). How do we get rid of poverty? 1. There is nothing in OUR capitalist society that stops any poor person from lifting themselves out of poverty. I know (and have worked for) many who have. Our economy by any standard anywhere in the world is very good even now as we stand on the precipice of a possible recession - it's why people continue to pour in from all over the world to live. 2. Stop the abuse of the super extended welfare programs which exploit people by creating a crutch long after they need it - and the only reason why I say this is because I know many - one of them, a family member - who are living like this and it is beyond disgusting. 3. Not living above ones means also helps. Unfortunately America has a very bad habit living off credit cards and getting themselves into trouble that they find hard to get out of.
I have been in that hole - ended up living with roaches, eating bagels for breakfast lunch and dinner that I bought with nickels and dimes that I scouted for in every nook and cranny of my apartment. I've even had to borrow money for rent. The one person who helped me doesn't even know she helped me because she helped me by seeing her as an example. She was an attorney (same age as me) that I worked for who was making about $800,000 a year (twenty years ago). I realized that the only difference between me and her was that she worked HARD TO GET WHERE SHE WAS and I did not - I made stupid decisions - thank God I did not have a child out of wedlock (the greatest epidemic in America is the single parent family). By that time I realized where I went wrong, I was already in my mid 40s. I felt it was too late to change the trajectory of my life, but I did the best I could. The rest is too long to write, but I'm in a better place now because I tightened my belt and started to make better decisions. Nowhere near where that attorney is, but I do admire her.
