  1. What a horribly ungrammatical sentence. 'Gotten' is only used by the uneducated. US (United States) is a singular, hence you use 'has' not 'have'. And since US (United States) is impersonal, you say 'itself' not 'themselves'. So a grammatically correct sentence would be 'The US has got itself into an almighty conundrum'. But then again you're Australian, which means you don't speak English properly.
