@elvemage3082 Pretty sure he was joking. Though what he said was true. You will either pay more, suffer a huge quality drop, or do without. Tariffs like these cannot possibly deliver any other outcome.

@k1ng_chicken Only real way to do that (assuming you can even produce what you need) is for US workers to accept huge wage cuts across the board to make them competitive with overseas. There is a good reason why you do NOT produce everything yourself. Think about it.

If American companies had been able to source the goods they need locally and cheaply from America do you not think they would have been doing that all along? They import stuff because it of its quality and/or cheap price. Either the American option was unavailable, poor quality or over-expensive. That's WHY YOU IMPORT. The tariffs can only result in 3 possible outcomes: goods and services will become either unavailable, of lower quality or more expensive. There is no other "magic" outcome from this.

You would have been making and growing these goods all this time if able. Do you think companies import what they need just for fun? The ignorance around the damage that is about to be done to the US economy is staggering.

These tariffs can only result in 3 possible outcomes: goods and services will become either unavailable, of lower quality or more expensive. There is no other "magic" outcome from this. (I guess you could lower US supply prices - assuming the product in question can be sourced in America - to make them competitive, IF you were prepared to massively cut the wages and working conditions for US workers, but I assume you Americans would not like that too much.)

These tariffs (can only result in 3 possible outcomes).... 1) Prices will go up (for Americans not foreigners, the price hikes are always passed to the consumer, companies are not benevolent) 2) Quality will drop (local supplies are lower quality by definition, or they would have been used in the first place) 3) Thing becomes unavailable. Won't work. The tax cut that would be required to make it competitive would be higher than is actually possible. Do you know how much similar jobs pay overseas? The whole thing was a smokescreen of lies to appeal to the ignorant so he could get votes.
