  2. The answer to your question of how 50% of russia's most elite force could be wiped out is rather simple. They are not really "elite" in the way the West knows the word. Being elite in comparison to the standard russian military means less than nothing. Let's remember that at the start of the war the VDV were absolutely destroyed by a Ukrainian military that was in disarray at the time and had as yet received no military aid from the West.
