  3. CPLDs are useful because they are ready immediately. FPGAs need to clock bits out of a ROM or Flash EEPROM one by one to program them on boot. So, FPGAs are not ever going to take over everything. On the other hand, PALs/PLAs are not as flexible as CPLDs.
