Johnson Li how many kg rubles did you get for that?

Johnson Li Russia was not generous and there was no American bully. Look “holodomor”, why don’t you!

Japan and South Korea have both publicly stated that they consider the defense of Taiwan an essential part of the defense of their own countries.

True, but you also have a weirdly named capital and a presitator you only just got rid of. I hope the new guy is better.

@aleksei8867 I was of course in favour of the mission that stopped Serbian aggression. Look it up. The Serbs were the bad guys, just like they were in 1914.

@Rii_077 start by reading about the revolutions in 1848 and how industrialization changed the way the economy worked in country after country. There were new classes of people who wanted influence + larger groups of have-nots in the cities who had to be placated (and who were very dangerous if they got angry). The revolutions themselves didn’t end well, but the threat of revolution often pressured kings towards a limited form of democracy. The UK took a different path than continental Europe and had an elected parliament far earlier but it wasn’t really democratic until the late 19th century. Look up “rotten boroughs” for more info. WW1 caused a big change towards a more inclusive democracy in Europe: more men could vote and women also got the vote. The kings lost a lot of power as well.

@Rii_077 that’s why it surprised me so much that he refused to come to Russia’s aid in the early days of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Hong Kong was unfortunately "returned" to a China that never owned Hong Kong in the first place. It should have remained with the UK, left independent, or joined Taiwan. China has clearly broken the treaty about the relationship between Hong Kong and mainland China. In my eyes, it gives Hong Kong the right to leave.

The Ukrainian version is correct… but maybe the casualty numbers from Ukraine aren’t quite right. The official Russian numbers are definitely not correct. NATO still hasn’t fired a single shot, despite Russian attacks 20km from the border. On the other hand, we (NATO members but also many others) are sending lots of defensive weapons to Ukraine. There are also AWACS and BE-3 planes in the air all the time next to the borders of Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. We have also moved lots of soldiers, planes, and military gear to Eastern Europe in order to deter from attacks on NATO members — because it would be so tempting to send missiles to targets in Finland, the Baltics, Poland, …

Is the new president good? How much influence does the old president and his family have behind the scenes?
1
@Rii_077 thank you! Sounds like the old guy (and his incompetent lazy bling-loving daughter) really is being sidelined. I had no doubt that the new guy was competent — he has been working for the old guy since at least 2002, and you can’t run a country without having someone to do all the boring detailed nitty gritty stuff. Seems like he saw his chance to take over part of the old guy’s coalition and dismember the rest (because they wouldn’t switch allegiance or because they were untrustworthy or whatever). Of course, “fighting corruption” is one of the oldest tricks in the book. It’s what Shevardnadze did in Georgia and what Xi is doing in China. Seems like nobody really knows how serious he means it. I’ve been hearing noises about further decentralization of power, which is great if true.
1
@Rii_077 who would he be a puppet of now that Nazarbayev has been sidelined? A small coalition of oligarchs, perhaps? At any rate, I wish you and your country the best of luck. We’ll know he’s serious when the capital gets a less idiotic name ;) (Have you studied the path Western European countries took from being owned by a single family towards democracy, rule of law, meritocracy, and low corruption? I have and I still don’t really understand how we became so lucky. It’s one of biggest miracles in history. The path was long and crooked and not without thorns… and different in each country. Having high literacy rates and an elite that knows it has to give up some of its privileges to maintain its wealth and relevance seem to be required ingredients… maybe that’s what your elite has realized, too.)

@Rii_077 don’t stick to sources in English when it comes to the history of our democracies and our industrialization. Reading German and French Wikipedia using google translate gives you a very different perspective. It also lets you understand things that don’t make any sense in isolation: there is a deep connection between the American and French revolutions, for example, because the (massive) French aid to the Americans practically bankrupted the country and led to very high taxes… which was one of the causes of the French Revolution.

Plus plenty of homegrown craziness. Look up the name of the capital and check out why it has that name, for example…

@Nightbot1 hi, bot! How’s the weather in St. Petersburg?
1
That doesn’t happen until the Russians leave :(
1
Hi, 五毛! Taiwan is not ruled by the Communist Usurpers in Beijing. The Taiwanese government is the rightful government of all China.
1
What are you talking about? It is almost non-existent! (Most Russians seem to be brainwashed and believe their country is doing the right thing… it’s perfectly ok to hat those people. But the sensible ones? No, of course not.)

@errata393 Russian bot is Russian.. or possibly schizophrenic. Maybe both. The good news is that there is medication for schizophrenia…

@OneManStartup hi, bot. How many kg worthless rubles are they paying you for that?
