  1. Only people who were adult in the 70's know... and probably only those who lived in or near a big city. There were around 13-14 million people in Afghanistan in 1979 and 40 million today. In other words, we are talking about a minority of the people who were born around 1960 or earlier and there aren't a lot of those people. Googling for "afghanistan population pyramid", we can see that people of the right age are around 5% of the population -- and only a minority of those actually have any real experience with Western values. People don't really get old over there + 40-50% were born after 2000. And who brought those modern, Western values to Afghanistan? The Soviet Union. And who helped the Islamists? The US... I think this is the clearest case of the US being on the wrong side of a Soviet/US proxy war.
