  3.  @christopherfisher128  you shouldn’t be. The scientific literature in criminology is weird: there are two kinds and they have very little connection with each other. One uses words and talks again and again about how punishment doesn’t work and how criminals can be rehabilitated and how we should treat excons like upstanding citizens who have paid their debt to society. The other uses numbers and is empirically based. It is full of moderately advanced statistical methods. It proves again and again that criminals are hard to rehabilitate, that punishment doesn’t work well BUT IT IS THE BEST METHOD OF REHABILITION WE HAVE(!) and that it is prudent to give excons a wide berth, etc. Things like community service work great with people who aren’t really cut out for the criminal life in the first place. It doesn’t work with real criminals. Adherents of the former tend to be on the far left, of course. I can read the numbers and do the math. So, no, I’m definitely not a guy who believes much in second chances.
