  3. Full flow staged combustion isn’t just “closed cycle” combustion. There have been a few experimental FFSC engines before but Raptor is the only one that has actually flown.

  10. Why are there so many different accounts here who are hung up on a dumb misunderstanding of closed cycle engines (lots of those) vs full-flow staged combustion engines (a specific and quite rare kind of closed cycle engine)? It’s almost as if one person has a dozen accounts…

  11.  @mrbaab5932 check the orbit again. You can probably find a drawing or computer simulation. It is an orbit around the sun that is s elliptical that it touches earth’s orbit and mars’ orbit. I think it even goes a bit beyond Mars’ orbit.

  12. There are many kinds of closed cycles. Full-flow staged combustion is rare - and raptor was the first one of those that actually flew.

  17. Mars will remain dependent on Earth for a long, long time. Spain, Portugal, France, and the Netherlands were able to maintain colonies half way around the Earth back in the age of sail.
