@adub1300 same, but for 200 missions straight?

Bigger combustion chambers are generally harder (combustion instabilities are worse). Bigger things are also harder to make (and might require bigger tools).

Full flow staged combustion isn’t just “closed cycle” combustion. There have been a few experimental FFSC engines before but Raptor is the only one that has actually flown.

@weed...5692 no. Absolutely wrong. Look those engines up, look at the diagrams that describe the pumps and the plumbing.

Everyday Astronaut has some really good videos about it. He also has one about the entire (huge) family of Soviet rocket engines. They were quite impressive! (But Raptor is better.)
3
We really need Hugo Drax to create that company!
2
It’s external on most of the engines on the lower stage, simply to save mass. Others can start up away from the pad.

No.
1
Yeah. The V2 used H₂O₂ for that.

Why are there so many different accounts here who are hung up on a dumb misunderstanding of closed cycle engines (lots of those) vs full-flow staged combustion engines (a specific and quite rare kind of closed cycle engine)? It’s almost as if one person has a dozen accounts…

@mrbaab5932 check the orbit again. You can probably find a drawing or computer simulation. It is an orbit around the sun that is s elliptical that it touches earth’s orbit and mars’ orbit. I think it even goes a bit beyond Mars’ orbit.
1
There are many kinds of closed cycles. Full-flow staged combustion is rare - and raptor was the first one of those that actually flew.
1
@yukon4511 moron.
1
Huh?
1
Not anymore. Raptor is better.

@vyacheslavvorobyov22 you do know that “reinvented” is a figure of speech in English, right? Look it up :)
1
Mars will remain dependent on Earth for a long, long time. Spain, Portugal, France, and the Netherlands were able to maintain colonies half way around the Earth back in the age of sail.
1
At least they aren’t gonna die yet.
1
They have. It’s bigger and heavier now, which is partly the cause of the heat shield problem.
