  1. I think they might just be referring to “search and rescue” communication with certain satellites. Galileo, Beidou and newer GPS and GLONASS and many other sats work with search and rescue terminals. Many newer cell phones support those protocols.

You have clothes, shoes, soap, clean running water, a toilet, probably at least a shower, a fridge/freezer, a microwave, a stove, a smartphone, a pretty good sound system (maybe headphones+phone only), easy cheap/free access to almost all the good music humanity ever made, plates, knives, forks, spoons, access to a library, access to healthcare (even if you believe you don’t)… and probably a car. Most middle class people in China don’t have all that. Most people in history didn’t. Most people in the US didn’t just a few decades ago.

  9. No, the room temperature ones need extreme pressures to work. The “high-temperature” ones (that need to be cooled with liquid nitrogen) are ceramic and therefore brittle. People have managed to make superconducting tape out of them, though.

  10. I don’t know if this particular product exists, even as a prototype. It is not an RTG, though. RTGs use a heat source (heat generated by radioactive decay) and a cold reservoir (the coldness of space in the case of deep space probes) and something like a Peltier element (can be other things) that generate electricity from the temperature difference. What they claim is something that (indirectly) uses alpha radiation emitted into a semiconductor as a power source. This is real and has been known about for a long time. The new claim here is a higher efficiency and economic viability. The power it can generate is minuscule (as they clearly state) but it can continue for decades and decades. And it is tiny and non-radioactive (alpha particles are super easy to block) and doesn’t use plutonium.

Who figured out how to make high quality paper from cotton? Europeans. Who figured out how make (initially cheap/low quality) paper from wood pulp? Europeans. Who figured out how to make the production faster by having paper mounds that drained faster? Europeans. The Chinese used bamboo slats with a tiny space between them as the bottom. Europeans used a metal wire mesh. Why? The Europeans knew how to make metal wire and China didn’t. That’s also why Europe made chain mail since around 300 BC and the only chain mail in China was imported, freakishly expensive, and very rare.

  23.  @tooyoungtobeold8756  it’s not clear that the compass was invented there. If it were, it consisted of a magnet needle hanging from a very thin thread. A useful compass for ships consist of a compass needle in a box with water to dampen its motions… and with a glass lid. That is a European invention.

  33. They talked about welds/welts, not wealth. Weld as in welding (TIG, MIG, CO2, ..,) and welt as in the marks people have on their skin after being whipped (punishment or sadomasochism). Wiktionary is a good online dictionary. Edit: spelling.
