The cleaner methods already exist (and have for a long time). They cost a bit more than the methods the Chinese use, that's all.

@puraLusa don’t say “yes” and then continue to misinform. The physicist is right, obviously. Releasing the water really doesn’t matter, no matter how much you say “but” and drone on about fish.
11
@i6power30 the “brutality of Western imperialism” gave China trains, more rule of law, better taxation, postal services, universities, proper medicine, etc. “internal strife” killed hundreds of millions. They don’t really compare, do they?
10
All the big ones and most of the small ones?
9
We just got a little rain in Copenhagen. It was sorely needed.
8
@308_Negra_Arroyo_Lane actually, they almost certainly didn’t.
7
The Turkish earthquake was a lot closer to the surface (10 km vs 30 km) so it wasn’t just down to better buildings. It was mostly the buildings, though.
6
Well, the Other China was…
6
The Russian central bank director has reminded me of Schacht for more than a year now.
6
@LTNetjak Methinks one should look a little closer into Tesla than one has done so far. (You are very, very wrong about Tesla.)
5
I thought you were just trolling but those rumors are real. Nobody seems to know what’s actually going on at the moment.
5
Harmony OS = Android with different wallpaper and a crippled App Store.
5
They might end up in Greece if they keep digging. Or Argentina.
4
I’m a fan of Pettis :)
4
“Almost”!?!? You mean “much worse than”, right?
4
@puraLusa people who can’t or won’t do really, really basic math should not have high opinions of themselves.
4
@popcorn6931 I don’t think Russia can pay for much these days…
4
Don’t buy yet. The prices are still very far from their natural level.
4
@skydragon23101979 so the recession will only be 5%? I’m not sure I believe that. (Yes, I know you meant 5% growth. We know the Chinese lie.)
4
@tonysu8860 several smaller Huaweis (xiaoweis?) + less government interference would work even better. And look at the gigantic Chinese oil/gas companies! If China actually wants growth, it would cut them up into smaller bits immediately. Should a mediocre oil company really have a million employees?
3
@beachcomber2328 who always happen to be the good guys. Amazing coincidence, really.
3
@LTNetjak you might be an auditor but you clearly don’t know much about Tesla’s finances.
3
@jaydee6268 Carbon credits are nice but they are a minor thing compared to the profit on the cars.
3
About a month or two ago.
3
@deborahcurtis1385 ya gots ta.
3
liz2 was queen of many places + “Head” of the Commonwealth.
3
Sanskrit has had approximately zero influence in Europe and Japan. You don’t believe in the “out of India” hoax, do you?
3
I don’t think there is much disagreement between Tony and ADV China. China still lives there and he doesn’t want to be chased out like the other two so he is extremely careful not to have an opinion of his own by always quoting Pettis or official docs.
3
Feichang ominous, followed by zui ominous.
3
But not likely to affect the rest of us much… whereas the 2008 crisis wasn’t a crisis in China at all.
3
You have some reverb due to the room you record in. You can fix most of this by hanging up some cloth… could be carpets, could by sheets, could be clothes, by the walls or just around where you record your voice. Should be pretty easy to fix.
3
“Number 3” doesn’t have the same meaning as “number 2” ;)
3
@pablosskates7067 developing countries should actually have more growth. It’s called catch up growth and can easily be 20% per year.
2
@jasperhorace7147 if only you had some sort of suitable footwear you could use…
2
It worked so well for Zimbabwe!
2
Zhou.
2
@thomasherrin6798 yep. Have you done the comparison? I did a few years ago and our planes were usually cheaper than their high-speed trains (and a lot faster).
2
@DoubleDogDare54 I can tell that he is “kiwistralian” but I can get any closer than that. He’s vowels are pretty much in the right place (very unusual for kiwis!) but he doesn’t sound overly Australian either. I don’t know if he is first gen and his parents are English or if he spent some years in London. Maybe he is toning down his kiwistralianness for our benefit. I don’t really know and it’s been bugging me for quite some time. (I’m Danish.)
2
You may not have studied an honest version of Chinese history. It sounds a lot like the version the party has created, though. My reading of Chinese history is one of an almost unbroken line of incompetent elites who cared nothing at all about the common people.
2
@tonysu8860 no, it’s mostly the same codebase. It really is Android with a few modules/layers replaced for license/copyright reasons and some graphics/animation differences for branding/face reasons and a different (worse!) App Store for walled garden/CCP reasons (they can’t allow free access to “dangerous” Android apps).
2
Perhaps they shouldn’t build new buildings right there where they would just get flooded again. Perhaps find somewhere else that doesn’t get flooded?
2
I actually don’t believe it at all.
2
“Lagging lodging leases loom”
2
@hughmungus2760 90nm outperforming 5nm?!?! What are you smoking?
2
Not everything counted as investment in China is actually investment. Pettit seriously overcounts the investment percentage in China. (Also, stupid high-speed trains to nowhere or super expensive train routes up and down mountains don’t count as infrastructure let alone “the best in the world”. China lacks airplane routes and roads and cars — and serpentine roads for many mountains.)
2
@alec6521 My guess is between 33% and 50% of the official size. I've been wondering the same thing for a couple of years but I have no access to data that can narrow it in. I do see small signs of improvement here and there: on the chest-thumping China-is-so-great videos about stupid white elephant megaprojects, the construction workers have better and better safety equipment the newer the video is. They are getting close to Western/Japanese/South Korean/Taiwanese standards now. I also see rice farmers wearing rubber boots now instead of walking around barefoot in the wet rice paddies -- which protects against getting cut by sharp stones and against parasites that attack through the feet. Little things like that make me happy. People are still quite poor, though, and ordinary people in big cities still look a lot poorer than they do in rural Ukraine during a war.
2
Regarding the “ice getting thinner”: I think that’s why he takes pain to quote mainland sources, such as caixin. I don’t understand how caixin can get away with being so candid but I’m grateful for it.
2
If the houses will last that long, of course.
1
The two common Chinese vaccines worked okay-ish for the original COVID-19 but they are almost useless against the current versions, so unless they mass vaccinate people with a proper (Western) vaccine, it ain’t gonna help.
1
They deserve one-state solutions with zero Chinese — just as the Palestinians deserve a one-state solution with zero Jews.
1
She was a Communist who wanted Chile to be run by a different and far worse dictatorship than Pinochet’s. It’s a disgrace she was allowed to be president even once.
1
Germany was not the bad guy in WW1, though. Germany supported Austria’s entirely reasonable cause. France and Russia used that as an excuse to gang up on Germany and Austria-Hungary.
1
It’s a pity physics doesn’t agree.
1
Cultural, not color. China would have been much better off with a colour revolution.
1
Meanwhile, lots of people are still so poor that they eat rats…
1
Make Tocharia Indo-European again!
1
A few of the HSRs are actually gains. Most are drains.
1
Just for fun, try comparing the long-distance train fares in China with plane fares in Europe over similar distances…
1
Is it bigger than Commonwealth Games?
1
@davidcooper9825 we need to work on your reading comprehension first. Wealth inequality is a bigger problem in China than in the US.
1
@DoubleDogDare54 how did he get his vowels fixed?
1
Optical computing works, it’s just not very compact. It’s damn fast, though. Optical data transfer definitely works — that’s what fiber cables are used for. We also have high speed LANs that use fiber instead of copper. We prefer copper most of the time because it is cheaper and easier to work with, even if it isn’t quite as fast.
1
He can’t talk about those things anyway because he doesn’t want to get kicked out of China. He is really careful to only quote “safe” sources and not mention his own opinions when he dances around such topics.
1
Agree. It was a bit long but it felt like normal content. More of that, please!
1
The official Chinese GDP already seems to high to be true -- and they claim that the growth continues during all their stupid lockdowns, trade problems, energy problems, drought, trade embargos, etc!? "It's just a scratch, my GDP is still growing."
1
WaPo said nothing about Democrats using three letters agencies to spy on presidential candidates before and after Nixon. WaPo pretended Hunter Biden’s laptop was fake and that the fake allegations against Trump (Steele dossier) were true. It’s not as good and unbiased a paper as most people believe.
1
@raevj “now”? Wasn’t it always?
1
The Chinese did NOT kick their opium habit. It grew after the opium wars (which China lost) and it grew even more as China began to grow its own opium. And then it grew even more as the Communist rebels grew even more opium to finance their wars (and the luxury lifestyles of their leaders).
1
More like the war saved you.
1
It’s a freehand beard.
1
@Bunnyroo7 yeah, the way we do it in the EU is absurd. But the US should still lower the limit for China to somewhere between 0 and 100 dollars.
1
“Happy Sunday, here’s some more bad news.”
1
China has claimed ownership with zero merit since 1911 or 1912 (right after the revolution that ended the empire). Sadly, there’s nothing new about that.
1
@gtw4546 they suffer a lot less than they did under Mao and under many of their crazy emperors. It’s not good now, but it is amazing how much worse things have been.
1
“The real estate disaster of the Middle Kingdom”? “Lying about lodgings in lawless China”?
1
Broken bricks break back of banks in China?
1
The NASA Germans, who did all the hard work, used metric.
1
Remember Walter Duranty and the Pulitzer Price? The media certainly wasn’t very honest back then.
1
When the “good guys” do it, of course! Pearl Harbor was an unprovoked attack totally unconnected to the American blockade that preceded it.
1
Yes, but a lot of those apartments are in the wrong place (with no non-speculative buyers in sight) or very low quality.
