Imagine trying to do this with a couple of children and a baby. Don't forget the endless other chores (laundry with a scrub board, drying clothes inside in the winter, soap making, candle making, clothes making, cleaning, washing dishes, carrying water, chamber pots, cleaning the fireplace, making butter and cheese, canning, gardening... and if you have livestock! Imagine washing yourself and your hair! Walking miles for everything. Stores were usually only for things you couldn't make or produce yourself. Proof of the saying, "The good ole', bad ole' days!"
