In the Chinese culture; outside interests making up stories to try and discredit them is taken very seriously indeed (loss of face); also they are not prepared to take lectures from a body like the EU and if the EU wants to levy economic sanctions on China based on lies, they'll respond. The media (here) might take note, their words could start a trade war...
