Those in the occupied Eastern regions: mainly speak Russian; have a similar culture and after the election of a "Western friendly" government in 2014, these regions voted for independence (which was not "recognised" by anyone; until Russia did in 2022); while the Crimean voters only had the choice of Ukraine or Russia (easy to predict how that would go). I don't believe the Eastern regions want to be part of Ukraine; there was already an eight year civil war regarding that; there certainly has been a displacement of people and it seems the Western media would prefer if children were left in a war-zone. Ukraine already did sign a deal with Russia; a key condition was neutrality and the Western cosignatories did not respect this (kept throwing money at Ukraine; buying land and doing "deals"). Russia certainly imprisoned the AZOV regiment; but I don't believe they were imprisoning civilians or targeting civilians, but military and Western arms shipments are legitimate targets. I believe the "breakaway regions" voted to rejoin Russia in 2022; with a choice between West and East, they seem to prefer Russia. It's true what you say though; we don't hear much from the Ukrainians who were fighting for independence and the easy answer is it doesn't suit the globalist narrative. It's becoming clear that: China; Russia; India and others reject what the West has to offer; they've formed their own bank; exchange mechanism and seem a good fit economically; they are also nuclear superpowers that can defend themselves. Those unfortunate people you talk about, already made their decision; as for the Western regions, I'm not sure the EU would accept Ukraine and them joining NATO may start WW3. Before we all march off to war, maybe decide what's in it for us; Ukraine should have stayed neutral.
